[Dokter Umum] Milk may help to reduce herpes outbreaks [ O O T ]

Foods for Herpes

Milk may help to reduce herpes outbreaks.

Herpes, the herpes simplex virus, is a complex viral strain that causes everything from cold sores to genital warts and even shingles. According to San Diego Homeopathy, people who have viruses like herpes see a reduction of symptoms by choosing foods high in the amino acid lysine and low in the amino acid arginine. This is because arginine increases cell replication and allows the virus to spread. Lysine works in opposition to arginine, decreasing the ability of the virus to replicate. Foods that are high in lysine should be encouraged for people who have herpes because they can possibly help to reduce the symptoms and number of outbreaks.

Beets

Beets are high in the amino acid lysine and have a good lysine-to-arginine ratio. San Diego Homeopathy states that a serving of beets has 72 mg of lysine, but only 30 mg of arginine, so the lysine-to-arginine ratio is 2.4. Anything two or above means there is a good amount of lysine compared to arginine.

Milk

Milk is an excellent choice for someone who has the herpes virus, especially if they drink a glass of milk or two every day. The University of Maryland Medical Center explains that people who take lysine regularly have fewer outbreaks of cold sores and genital herpes from the herpes virus. A glass of skim milk has 633 mg of lysine and 302 mg of arginine, which gives it a good lysine-to-arginine ratio of 2.2. Low-fat milk has slightly less lysine but also slightly less arginine, so the ratio of lysine to arginine is still 2.2.

Cheese

All types of cheese are effective in reducing herpes outbreaks, according to San Diego Homeopathy. The website explains that Swiss cheese has the best lysine-to-arginine ratio of all the cheeses, with 733 mg of lysine and 263 mg of arginine per serving, giving it a ratio of 2.8. Mozzarella cheese has a ratio of 2.4 and cheddar cheese has a ratio of 2.2, as given by San Diego Homeopathy.

Yogurt

People with the herpes virus may benefit significantly from eating yogurt. According to San Diego Homeopathy, plain yogurt has 706 mg of lysine, but only 237 mg of arginine per cup. Low fat fruit-flavored yogurt has 810 mg of lysine and 272 mg of arginine per serving, giving it a lysine-to-arginine ratio of 2.98.
